Mini Pupillage

Unit Chambers understands the importance of gaining valuable insights into life at the Family Bar for those interested in joining the profession. Once a year, we host our ‘School of Court – Pupillage Insight Day’ in November. If you wish to apply, please send us your CV and a cover letter outlining why you wish to join our Pupillage Insight Day.

Applications will open in October of 2024.

Additional Opportunities

If you are interested in a career as a barrister, we may be able to offer you a mini pupillage, which is a unique opportunity for you to gain an insight into the day-to-day work of a barrister. The objective of the mini-pupillage is for you to get to know us and for us to get to know you. As a mini pupil, you may travel to court with counsel (within a reasonable distance of Chambers), observe and take notes in hearings, sit in on conferences and read and consider case papers. Mini-pupils may also be asked to undertake legal research relevant to cases that they are observing.

We will be taking part in this year’s Bar Placement Week which aims to give more students from widening participation backgrounds to experience life at the Bar, by shadowing practicing barristers and undertaking advocacy training from Tuesday 2 July – Friday 5 July 2024.

Who can apply: state-educated sixth form and college students and 1st year undergraduate students who previously attended a state-educated sixth form and college can independently apply to the scheme.

How to apply:

Eligible students can:

  1. Download the application form (MS Word).
  2. Get the consent form signed by their parent, carer or guardian – this is at the bottom of the application form (university students do not need to complete this form)
  3. Complete the equality monitoring form online (this is voluntary).
  4. Email your completed application form and consent form to [email protected] by 09:00 on Friday 3 May.

Terms and Conditions

Those undertaking work experience are normally expected to be available between 9am and 5pm.

We can offer opportunities including experiencing a day in the life of a barrister or family clerk as well as 1-2-1 Teams calls with our barristers to learn more about what they do on a daily basis.

All individuals will be expected to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Our Mini Pupillages will not be assessed. Applicants who are offered a mini pupillage are neither more nor less likely subsequently to be offered a pupillage than applicants who are not.
